First Technology has eight local offices in South Africa, and is a Ruckus Wireless Big Dog reseller.
The solution consisted of a deployment of Ruckus ZoneFlex 7962 dual-band MIMO 802.11n access points with "beamforming technology”, keeping the number of concurrent connections low (remember, the problem was coverage, not client volumes), which allowed the deployment of cost-effective repeaters.
The ZoneFlex 7962 is based on adaptive antenna technology that extends signal range two to four times, while minimising packet loss by constantly routing WiFi transmissions over the highest performing signal paths.
It is the world's only enterprise-class AP that concurrently supports Automatic Interference Mitigation (AIM), spatial multiplexing and adaptive antenna technology. The ZoneFlex 7962 delivers the industry's most solid 802.11n performance at range.
Because the ZoneFlex 7962 is able to constantly find the best RF paths for each packet, once deployed, enterprises never have to worry about constant site surveys as the environment changes. It can be deployed as a standalone access point or as part of centrally-controlled Smart Wireless LAN with the Ruckus ZoneDirector. Smart Mesh Networking, another unique feature, makes the ZoneFlex 7962 perfect for reliably extending wireless LAN services to areas where cabling Ethernet isn't possible or economical — saving time and money.
A simple and intuitive management interface was provided with the Ruckus Wireless ZoneDirector controller, capable of managing up to 500 ZoneFlex Smart WiFi access points from a single location. The Ruckus ZoneDirector 3000 is designed for simplicity and ease of use. It integrates the Ruckus Smart/OS application engine that delivers advanced features such as smart wireless meshing, high availability, hotspot authentication, elegant guest networking and dynamic WiFi security.
The Ruckus ZoneDirector easily integrated with network, security and authentication infrastructure already in place, and was easily configured through a point-and-click Web wizard. Ruckus ZoneFlex APs were automatically discovered and configured by the ZoneDirector.
It was instantly noted that reliable coverage of previously difficult to reach areas could now be covered and insured a reliable connection, thanks to the Ruckus Wireless "beamforming technology” and the ZoneDirector controller's simple and effective management.
With a simple, easy, rapid and cost-effective multi-purpose deployment, guest and business requirements were met as well as providing improved ROI to Peermont, and above all, stopped the guest complaints regarding connectivity and Internet access.
Peermont conducted a POC at its Umfolozi Hotel Convention Resort, in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, near Richards Bay, in November 2010. Twelve Ruckus ZoneFlex 7962 Indoor 802.11n Dual-Band access points were deployed, providing WiFi throughout the hotel rooms and public areas, and managed with a Ruckus Wireless Zone Director 1000. At the time of writing, no complaints had been received.
As a result of the successful POC at Umfolozi Casino, Ruckus Wireless APs were selected for Peermont's most prestigious development, the Emperor's Palace Casino and Entertainment complex, near OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, and new Peermont resort/casino developments will be outfitted with Ruckus WLANs, with ZoneDirector controllers. Finally, existing properties will be retrofitted/upgraded as and when required.
"We have been able to significantly reduce guest complaints with the reliable coverage of previously difficult to reach areas with the Ruckus Wireless solution, using the Adaptive Antennas Systems and BeamFlex technologies,” says Ernst Karner, Group IT Manager.
